  • TD Garden Scoreboard Nearly Complete

Update: 9/1/21 New Photo from @Heather.Dixon.1466 TD Garden hosted a graduation ceremony recently and we can see the new scoreboard hanging in the rafters. This is the first time seeing it from below and now we know that it will have 4 under-belly screens. Aside from that, we do not have a lot of specific details about this board yet. It appears to be a conservative board compared to some in the league. We do not see many bells or whistles with this thing, and it certainly doesn't look like it will be among the largest in the league. One thing is certain though, it is a solid design and it will be a nice upgrade from the old, tiny scoreboard the Bruins fans have watched for the past decade.

  • What If The Playoff Logos Were Still On Ice

Back to our "What If?" Series, looking at what the 2020-2021 season ice rinks would have looked like if the NHL had placed the traditional Stanley Cup Playoffs graphics in the ice. Update: Here are the Stanley Cup Final logos on ice.

  • TD Garden Scoreboard Construction (Updated 8/15)

Update: We received a photo of the construction progress as of 8/3 at TD Garden. There appears to be some sort of upper ring going in but we don't know if that will be for LED screens or arena signage. Right now my bets are on arena signage. Original Post: We have a sneak peek at how big the Boston Bruins scoreboard is going to be thanks to a photo by @heather.dixon.1466). It looks to be about 40 feet wide on each of the four sides, and will have flat screens. It also appears to have 16:9 main video screens which leads us to believe it will have some sort of LED above or below the main screens which will show scores. This won't be the largest in the league, but it will still be an excellent size for viewing from anywhere in the arena. We will keep watching for more updates!

  • Authentic Rinks

The center ice archive has gone through many changes over the last year, and we have one more big announcement regarding the site. We are bringing one of the most requested features to the archive. Authentic rink advertisements will now appear on ice. I have fought it for years, but since so many visitors ask for this, we have decided it is worth the extra effort. This will take a while to implement. We will add a section on our homepage letting you know what teams have authentic advertisements. Now on to how we will handle this in a way that is authentic but also keeps the center ice archive organized and focused on the center ice design above all else. Authentic Ads will only be placed on NHL rinks. There are just too many ad placements in other leagues, and not nearly enough reference photos/videos to accurately recreate them. Some teams have been known to change out their in-ice ads in the middle of the season, and this is now commonly done for the playoffs when the league puts in their league wide ads. We will only cover one set of advertisements per season and they will be based on regular season action. With some older ices, the advertisements sometimes got pretty close to the center ice circle. This means that some ads might fall within our square thumbnail images that focus solely on the center ice area. To keep browsing the archive clean and efficient, we do not plan to include those ads in our thumbnails. They will only show up on the full rink images. We have already begun working on this project. You can find advertisements on the NHL All Star ice rinks. For an updates on what teams we are upgraded to the new authentic rinks, please follow this thread in the community. Also here is a quick preview of some other rinks.

  • UBS Arena Sign Going Up On Scoreboard

It's a bit unusual to see the arena name signage go up on a scoreboard before the LEDs are even close to finished, but that is what is happening right now at UBS Arena. Check out their live camera to see how it is going! Also take a look at this photo from a few weeks ago to see just how big this board is going to be. Once complete, this board will look very similar to the PNC Arena scoreboard for the Carolina Hurricanes. The main difference will be that this board has equal sides.

  • Arenas that EA Sports Should Fix

We hope NHL 22 will be released on next gen consoles this fall, and we hope arenas and ice surfaces get updated with the upgrade. Here are some things that we would like to see fixed for each NHL rink. If a team/rink is not listed, we feel it is as accurate as possible. Anaheim Ducks - Honda Center This arena is pretty accurate. Just update the seat color to black. Boston Bruins - TD Garden The seat colors should be changed to black, and the paint colors of the press level and canopy should be updated. There will also be a new scoreboard this fall, so hopefully this can be updated in one of the first few patches. Carolina Hurricanes - PNC Arena The rafters of PNC Arena should be a much lighter gray. Columbus Blue Jackets - Nationwide Arena The lower rings of the scoreboard should be taller, making the entire scoreboard taller. Detroit Red Wings - Little Caesars Arena The seat color should be changed to black. Otherwise, this arena is spot on! Florida Panthers - BB&T Center The scoreboard should be a bit larger. New York Islanders - UBS Arena Hopefully this new arena can be added to the game at launch, or perhaps in a patch. Philadelphia Flyers - Wells Fargo Center The seats should now be all black. Pittsburgh Penguins - PPG Paints Arena The scoreboard shape is a bit off. Also the arena name at the top of the board was based on a temporary nameplate they used right after they changed names. It is larger now. San Jose Sharks - SAP Center The rafters should be much brighter. This is one of the things that makes this arena unique. Seattle Kraken - Climate Pledge Arena Hoping this new arena will also be added to the game this fall. St. Louis Blues - Enterprise Center The seats should be changed to black, and all of the blue walls should be light gray. The Canopy at press level should also be gray. The scoreboard is a bit small and not quite the right proportion. Washington Capitals - Capital One Arena The seats should be black, and the scoreboard is very outdated now. Also should have LED Rings all over the arena. Winnipeg Jets - Canada Life Centre With a new name, the scoreboard will need a new sign on top.

  • Site Update 2021.01

Following up on the rollout of our brand new website, we have now completed our first site update. Don't worry, we won't bore you with all of the fine details, but we will try to point out some of the larger fixes, changes, and additions. Sports Organist section added to the site. This section covers current organists from around the NHL, MLB, and NBA. We hope to add past organists in the future. Arena names have been added to the thumbnail pages of the center ice archive. History of the Rink has been moved under "The Rink" in the navigation menu. This is to accommodate some new features we have coming soon. Center Ice pages now open in a new window when you click on a center ice thumbnail so you won't lose your previous place while browsing the archive. Members of TheFaceoff.net Community now have early access to our latest feature, Building the Rink. If you see any errors, or would like to make suggestions, please email us at admin@thefaceoff.net. If you would like to request an ice or submit your own logo/ice concepts, please check out the Community page.

  • Barracuda Home Arena To Open in 2022

The San Jose Barracuda have yet to play on an ice surface with their logo painted on it. Due to COVID19, their new arena opening was delayed. While they won't have a home arena until the Fall of 2022, thanks to their temporary home on a San Jose Sharks practice rink, we have a pretty good idea of what the ice rink may look like at that time. What do you think of this ice? Do you think they should use a different version of their logo for center ice? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Winnipeg Jets' Arena Renamed

True North Sports and Entertainment has signed a ten year naming rights deal with Canada Life, a leading insurance and wealth management provider. The name "Canada Life Centre" will start July 1, 2021, but it will take a couple months to get all of the signage replaced. "As True North Sports + Entertainment celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, we can't think of a more exciting way to embark upon the next ten years of our organization's journey than with a partner like Canada Life, that shares the same community commitment and passion for our great city and country," said Mark Chipman, Executive Chairman of True North Sports + Entertainment. "We are proud to call the home of our Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose Canada Life Centre and look forward to associating the Canada Life brand with exciting moments in hockey and entertainment." Usually, we like to take this opportunity to come up with some concepts of what we think the new name will look like on ice. However, True North beat us to this by releasing their own press rendering of center ice. Still, its worth seeing how it will look on the full rink graphic. What do you think of the new name? Let us know in the comments below.

  • A New Web Experience

Welcome to the brand new home of TheFaceoff.net. The entire website has been rebuilt, from the ground up, on a new platform. This includes a complete rebuild of the center ice archive which had not seen a major change for the entire 10 year run of TheFaceoff.net. This update brings along some reorganization, updated features, and a couple brand new features. What’s New? Our site has always focused on the often overlooked aspects of hockey, and one of our newest features fits that description. We have added Sports Organists to our site, covering not just the NHL, but NBA and MLB organists as well. They add so much to the game but rarely get the credit they deserve for their contributions to the game day atmosphere. Now you can find information about almost every current organist for the top professional sports leagues. While laying out all the elements of our site, we really wanted to create a space on the site for our most frequent visitors to communicate with us, share their ideas, and offer feedback. For this reason, we have created The Faceoff Community. We hope it will be a lively place to interact with our followers and provide content based on their preferences. We will also be posting concept ices here. What’s Updated? We have upgraded several parts of the site. The center ice archive now has filters in place so you can search by season or team. Just click on the reset filter button [x] to start over and reveal all ices. Previously we had been upgrading all rinks to have nets, and this new site marks the completion of that process. Every rink on our site now has goal nets. Our Scoreboards section now shows boards to scale, and ranked from largest to smallest based on the width of the main video screen. Because some boards are not equal sided, we have a second page which you will find in the scoreboard navigation that ranks the boards by their smaller end screen displays. We will focus solely on NHL scoreboards going forward. For AHL and CHL scoreboards, we will direct you to our partner, TheDryve.ca. We have a lot of scoreboards up already but there will be more to come, and over time we will also add more variations of scoreboards (name/signage changes). What’s Changed? You may notice a few things are not where they were before. While building our new site, it gave us time to think about every aspect of the site, determine what worked well, and what could use some improvement. This led to a few changes in organization. As previously mentioned, Center Ice Concepts have been moved to the Community page. We want concepts to be more of a discussion and take feedback to improve concepts. Arena Logos are now a part of our new Arenas section. You will find logo history along with arena information, seating charts (coming soon) and videos from our arena partner, Rinks Around the League. We are starting with current NHL arenas and will expand to former arenas over time. We will also be including Rinks Round Up by Rinks Around the League. The Arenas section is still a work in progress, as we have plans to add more to it over time. Because the entire site, including the center ice archive, is housed on one platform now, using the search box at the top of the site is much more useful now. Results will populate from the Blog, Center Ice, all feature pages and from community posts. We are still working on some things all around the site and if you notice any issues, please let us know in the Community or email us at admin@thefaceoff.net. We hope you enjoy the new site.

  • Garden HDX Is History

Two Summers ago, we saw the skeleton of the Garden HDX in TD Garden and got very excited. A new scoreboard was on the way. When the season finally approached, what we saw was the same scoreboard. The off-season upgrade resulted in only a small increase in screen size, hardly noticeable without a side-by-side comparison. Now it did bring along true HD video, but it still left fans disappointed. This week, thanks to an Instagram post, we now know that the 2007 scoreboard is being completely disassembled to make way for a brand new scoreboard. Michael Bieke who operates this scoreboard has confirmed that the Garden will be getting a new scoreboard and sound system over the Summer. At this time we have no details on what the new board might look like, but the Bruins and Celtics were overdue for a true upgrade. Similar scoreboards in size and style, such as the Wells Fargo Center Bridgestone Arena and Prudential Center have already been replaced in the last couple of seasons. Meanwhile a couple such as KeyBank Center and Rogers Arena have yet to make any news about any potential upgrades. Here is just a sample of what a larger board might look like inside TD Garden, though we have absolutely no clue what the real thing may end up looking like. What kind of scoreboard would you like to see next for the Bruins? Let us know in the comments, or share you concepts in TheFaceoff Community.

  • What If The Cleveland Barons Still Played In The NHL?

For this scenario, I made a small update to the Barons logo. Their short live does not give us many hints at what a logo might look like today, so I simply used a more modern "C" and got rid of the wordmark inside it.

  • Tenth Anniversary

It is hard to believe The Faceoff is 10 years old. When I started this site, it was mostly just to show off a few of my graphics that I had created. I never believed it would turn into what it is today. This site started out as a small blogger site called "DTC's Painted Ice". I didn't spend much time on a name because it didn't feel like a big deal at the time. Thanks to some positive feedback about the images I had uploaded, I decided to create ice graphics for each team in the NHL. The graphics were lacking in quality and accuracy. At that time, I hardly noticed that teams changed their red lines from season to season. Once every ice was uploaded, I decided to give the site a proper name, and Frozen Faceoff was born. Over the years, the ice graphics would see many revisions and eventually became full rink graphics. The site name changed once more so we would no longer share a name with the NCAA tournament. I would like to take a moment to thank some people who have contributed to our site. NHL Horns & Songs, N2B (Alex), and Famous Goal Horns who have been goal horn partners over the years. Dryve (Ryan) for turning our 2D graphics into incredible 3D Scoreboards renderings. Our original ice research team (CF92 and Cory Gibson) who spent several of our early years working to ensure the highest attention to detail and accuracy. Last but not least, you, our fans who have been supportive and helpful with their contributions to our quest to archive as many center ice designs as possible. Throughout this month we will take a look at how the ice designs have progressed over time and we will also be celebrating with a look at some exciting updates to the site. Keep checking back throughout the month and follow us on Twitter for all the latest.

  • History of the Rink Upgraded

Check out our upgraded History Of The Rink page. Here is a look at some of the new and updated things you will find. All rink graphics have been upgraded to higher quality images with more precise markings, and the addition of goal nets. It will also be easier to find out the dimensions of a specific section of the ice with the addition of neutral zone, defensive zone, and goal line to end board space for each time period. You will also find we have noted the beginning of the use of advertising, both on the boards as well as in ice. Check out our updates and let us know if we missed anything at admin@thefaceoff.net.
